Report: #34a HURRICANE UPDATE
Date: 09/15/04
From: Richard@WorldCycle.org
Location: Kingston, Jamaica
Subject:
Ivan'ed Kingstonr

Category 4 to 5 Hurricane Ivan just wolloped Kingston, Jamaica, where I am now, with zinc-roof lickin' 150mph winds. Seventeen people were killed, island wide, and it's been a major disaster, even though Jamaica was spared the worst, because, inexplicably, Ivan dodged to the side at the last moment and didn't totally "mash up the place" (as they say here). Still plenty was mashed up, and torn apart, in a country that is already challenged by areas of extreme poverty and poor living conditions.

Thankfully, I am OK, and was staying with good friends in a very solid house. We only lost water and power for a few days. Electricity returned last night, but we are still without water.

But many weren't nearly so lucky, and there were many landslides, flash-floods, trees torn down, rooves removed and power lines pushed over.

If you get the chance to buy an extra packet of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, or some other produce, I'm sure that every other extra bit of income would be very welcome in Jamaica. They need all the help they can get.

Thanks for looking out for me.

Richard
